Many kinds of nausea and vomiting can be prevented by some simple precautions on your part. Not overdoing it on a night out is a good start!

Tummy bugs cause many instances of nausea and sickness and, while you won’t be able to dodge every bug going, good hygiene will keep many of them at bay. That means always washing your hands after using the toilet, gardening, cooking, or playing with pets. Those same precautions, along with thorough cooking, will help avoid food poisoning too.

Migraine sufferers can also experience nausea and vomiting associated with their headaches. To get a handle on your migraine, keeping a migraine diary is a good idea. It can help you identify the factors that trigger your attacks, and try and avoid them in future.

Period pain can also bring on nausea and sickness. A general exercise programme can help reduce the severity of period pain when it strikes. You may also find localised heat – from a hot water bottle, say – can help. A bath or shower can soothe you, and relaxation techniques such as yoga and Pilates can also reduce the severity of period pain.

Nausea and vomiting are never pleasant. It’s important to identify the underlying causes behind your symptoms, and take steps to address them. You’ll find more ideas in our Helpful Hints and Tips section.
